Since trying them on I have done the majority of my runs in them, from big days in the mountains, to shorter faster runs. Although this is the first generation of the Mont Blanc, this might be my favourite pair of trail running shoes in the Altra line-up.

The FootShapeTM toe box and the zero drop is why we love Altra shoes so much, but now we have it in a racing shoe! It is the perfect balance between a more plush, max cushioned shoe, but also a lightweight racing shoe. It is without a doubt capable of tackling the biggest mountain trails (hence the name), to fast and flat terrain.

Midsole
It took me about two runs to break the EGO MAX midsole in nicely and then I knew that this is going to be my go-to ultra-distance racing shoe. It has a plush feel, but is not too soft, which is great for underfoot protection over rocky terrain especially if you are wearing them for those long days out. Energy return from the midsole is great. I’ve been doing shorter trail tempo efforts in them to test the shoe and they are FAST! (Not the reps, the shoes). I can see myself reaching for them for much shorter races than the ultra-distance too.

Upper
This was probably the most impressive feature for me. They were able to keep the weight of the shoe to a minimum, because of the little, but strong materials used in the upper. That simple! The soft mesh is breathable and drains quite well. It is a snugger fit than say the Lone Peak will be, but since it is a racing shoe, the snugger fit is welcome. The material used in the upper is still soft enough for it to stay comfortable.

Grip
The shoe has a Vibram LiteBase outsole, which exceeded my expectations. It works well in wet or dry conditions. The lugs are not too aggressive, which is great if you run on a harder surface, but I know they will have my back on more slippery surfaces like rocks and roots. It is also extremely durable.

Final verdict
The shoe looks the part! It is the shoe all Altra fans have been waiting for. A shoe to go far or fast, or both.
